Houston Folklore and Music Society

The Houston Folklore and Music Society (HFMS) is a non-profit, membership organization in Houston, Texas, dedicated to the promotion and preservation of folklore and folk music. Founded in 1951, the HFMS has played a significant role in nurturing the folk music scene in Houston.

History

The HFMS was established following Houston's first National Folk Festival in 1951, which, although not greatly successful, connected a group of folk music enthusiasts. The society was founded by notable figures such as John Alan Lomax Jr., Ed Badeaux, Harold V. Belikoff, Howie Porper, Pete Rose, and Chester Bower. The HFMS aimed to preserve and celebrate folklore and folk music from across the country.

These events are designed to provide a platform for singer-songwriters, storytellers, and musicians to perform and share their work. The HFMS has hosted concerts featuring renowned artists like Pete Seeger, Doc Watson, and the Foggy Mountain Boys. In addition to its musical events, the society published a monthly newsletter called the Cotton Patch Rag, which has been in circulation since 1968. The newsletter includes a calendar of local folk music events, reviews, and articles contributed by members.

Membership and Impact

The HFMS has been a significant incubator for musical talent in Houston, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. Regular meetings allowed singers and songwriters to share their work and hone their craft, leading to lifelong friendships and musical collaborations. The Tex-i-an Boys, a group that formed from introductions made at HFMS meetings, is an example of this collaborative spirit. They released an album titled Songs of Texas in 1961.

Concert Series

The society is known for its Second Saturday Concerts, which have been a tradition since the early 1980s. These concerts feature a variety of acoustic music and are open to members and the general public. The HFMS also presents Second Sunday Concerts, which further support its mission to promote singer-songwriters.
