Introduction
BWROC Inc, also known as the Blue Water Recovery & Outreach Center, is a U.S. nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(3) entity. It was established in September 2017 to serve as a recovery community organization (RCO) aimed at helping individuals struggling with addiction and connecting them to recovery resources[2][3].
Purpose and Mission
BWROC's mission is to provide the face and voice of recovery, promote community wellness and engagement, and support all recovery pathways[2][3]. The organization is unique in that it is made up entirely of individuals with lived experience in recovery, allowing them to capitalize on relatability and trust in their support services[3].
Activities and Programs
- Recovery Outreach Programs: BWROC engages in recovery outreach programs such as "Recovery Education in the Workplace," which collaborates with various sectors to provide training on identifying substance use and offers on-site recovery education[2].
- Community Engagement: The organization hosts a weekly video series featuring personal recovery stories, aiming to reduce the stigma of addiction. These stories have garnered significant community attention, with over 130,000 views[2].
- Community Meetings and Events: BWROC organizes monthly community meetings and hosts large annual events to raise awareness and support for recovery efforts, attracting substantial community participation[2].
Leadership
The organization is led by Patrick Patterson, who serves as the Executive Director. Patterson is a leader in recovery initiatives and has been instrumental in expanding BWROC's community support and advocacy efforts[4]. Barbara Alexander serves as the Center Manager, providing strategic direction and support in peer recovery mentoring and coaching[4]. Nicole Bickel is a Recovery Coach who specializes in supporting families dealing with substance use-related issues[4].
Financial Overview
BWROC's financial structure primarily relies on contributions, which in recent years have accounted for the majority of its revenue[1]. In 2022, contributions made up 95.2% of total revenue[1]. The organization's asset base has increased over time, reflecting its growing impact and capacity in the community[1].
Impact and Position in the Community
BWROC plays a crucial role in addressing gaps in the continuum of care for substance abuse by focusing on community outreach and navigating resources for recovery. Its model, centered on lived experiences and relatable support, has been effective in engaging individuals in recovery and promoting community wellness[2][3].
