The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

Toastmasters International

Toastmasters International is a US-headquartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping individuals develop communication, public speaking, and leadership skills through a network of clubs worldwide.

Formation and History

The organization was founded on October 22, 1924, by Ralph C. Smedley in Santa Ana, California. Initially, it was part of the YMCA, aiming to improve the public speaking skills of young men. The first international chapter was established in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932. Toastmasters International was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1932 under Californian law and began admitting women in 1973.

Structure and Purpose

Toastmasters uses a local club-based structure with over 14,000 clubs in more than 145 countries. The average club size is about 20-30 members, and meetings typically occur weekly or biweekly. These meetings include prepared speeches, impromptu speaking sessions (Table Topics), and evaluations where members receive feedback on their performances.

Education Programs

Toastmasters offers several educational programs designed to enhance public speaking and leadership skills. The Pathways system provides members with eleven different learning paths focused on skills like public speaking, interpersonal communication, management, strategic leadership, and confidence. Each path includes fourteen projects with materials available online and in print.

Membership and Impact

As of recent years, Toastmasters has a membership exceeding 270,000 worldwide. The organization is known for its supportive environment where members can practice skills, receive constructive feedback, and develop lasting connections with peers.

Special Events

Toastmasters hosts the World Championship of Public Speaking, one of the largest speech contests globally, where thousands of participants compete annually.
