Our Lady of Peace (Minnesota)

Overview

Our Lady of Peace is a nonprofit Catholic organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Established by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne in 1941, the organization initially provided free care for terminal cancer patients without means. Over time, its mission has expanded to serve adult non-cancer patients of all backgrounds.

Programs and Services

Our Lady of Peace offers a range of services aimed at providing compassionate care:

  • Residential Hospice: The organization operates a 21-bed residential hospice facility. It is unique in that it does not charge patients or their families for care.

  • In-Home Hospice Program: This program allows patients to receive hospice care in their own homes, including private residences, nursing homes, and group homes, serving the seven-county metro area.

  • Home Health Care: Provides skilled post-operative care and therapies, palliative care, and assistance with daily living activities in the comfort of patients' homes.

  • Highland Block Nurse Program: Supported by state funding, this program focuses on helping older residents remain healthy and safe in their homes within the Highland Park neighborhood.

History

  • 1941: Founded on December 7th as Our Lady of Good Counsel Home, primarily serving the "cancer poor."

  • 1941–2009: Provided care to over 15,000 patients during this period.

  • 2001: Introduced the Hospice program to offer care wherever patients call home.

  • 2004: Began Home Health Care services.

  • 2009: Operations transitioned to the Franciscan Health Community.

  • 2015: Licensure changed to Residential Hospice, and the organization's name was officially recognized as Our Lady of Peace.

  • 2016 & 2021: Celebrated 75 and 80 years of providing end-of-life care, respectively.

Mission

Our Lady of Peace's mission is to provide care, comfort, and compassion to those in need, especially at the end of life, regardless of social, religious, or economic status. The organization aims to protect human dignity and offer personalized care during patients' end-of-life journeys.
