The Longears Safehouse (TLS) is a non-profit animal rescue organization based in New Mexico, founded in 2012. It is the only organization in the state dedicated to the specific needs of donkeys, mules, and hinnies. The organization operates under the federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, confirming its commitment to charitable purposes and animal welfare.

Mission
The mission of The Longears Safehouse is to enhance the well-being of donkeys and related long-eared animals by providing education about their mental and physical needs, training, and care. TLS engages in various initiatives, including rescuing donkeys in distress, rehabilitating them, and facilitating their adoption into loving homes. Additionally, the organization offers support during emergencies and educational programs for current donkey owners.

Programs and Services
The Longears Safehouse implements a structured set of programs designed to fulfill its mission:

• Rescue Intake: TLS actively rescues donkeys and mules facing abandonment, neglect, or abuse.

• Rehabilitation and Training: The organization focuses on gentling and training the rescued animals, addressing their physical and emotional needs to prepare them for adoption or safe sanctuary.

Facility
In 2019, The Longears Safehouse secured a 40-acre micro-ranch facility located north of Estancia, New Mexico. This facility serves as the primary location for its operations, improving the living conditions and care of the animals. The ranch allows for the accommodation of animals in need while providing a space for training and rehabilitation.

History
Since its inception, The Longears Safehouse has rescued and rehabilitated numerous donkeys from New Mexico and neighboring states such as Colorado, Texas, and Arizona. The organization’s focus on individual animal care and attention stems from its foundational belief that small organizations can better meet the needs of their animals and community.

Future Vision
The Longears Safehouse aims to establish a sustainable future by ensuring a succession plan for its leadership. This approach allows the organization to continue its work beyond the tenure of its founders.
