Team Wolf Floppy, a 1-year-old dog described as “sweet” and “timid,” was killed this week by a man who claimed she looked “wild” and was “trying to get into [his] sheep.” After killing his neighbor’s dog, Andy Chamberlain posed for a “trophy photo.” He later admitted he removed her tongue and then refused to return the body to the grieving family. The photo—since deleted—shows the shooter grinning while holding Floppy by the ears, rifle in hand. It’s sparked outrage across the small town of Lima, Ohio and beyond. The collective, dangerous mindset of our country towards wolves has our own dogs in the crossfire. All dogs come from wolves—if Floppy had wolf genes, what then? Do hybrids—or wolves—deserve less compassion? This is just another attempt to justify violence against animals under the guise of “livestock protection.” So long as anti-wolf policies continue to be the norm across the country, these horrific events will continue.
