In a small refugee camp near Hebron, a young woman named Diala has emerged as a symbol of resilience and determination. Recently graduating from Dar al-Kalima University with a degree in Interior Design, her journey is not just a personal triumph; it reflects the strength and aspirations of many who live under challenging circumstances. Diala, who was born and raised just a stone’s throw from her dreams at DAK, was always captivated by the idea of creating beautiful spaces. "I chose to study interior design because it has been my dream since childhood," she shared during a heartfelt conversation. Her enthusiasm for design is matched only by her desire to inspire others in similar situations to follow their own dreams. The backdrop of Diala's story is a complex and often heartbreaking reality. Living in a refugee camp, her daily life is punctuated by the sounds of conflict. Diala recounts the challenges she faces, stating, "I always wake up to the voice of the bombs, and it’s not good for a person to wake up like this." The occupation has imposed significant limitations on her freedom, including the inability to travel to Jerusalem, a mere seven miles away, that she has never seen. Yet, despite these challenges, Diala remains hopeful and continues to thrive as a student. Her family, displaced in 1948, has instilled in her the values of perseverance and hope. Diala credits her parents and siblings for their unwavering support throughout her educational journey. “My father has always been my biggest supporter and my mother has accompanied me with her words and prayers," she expressed gratefully. Diala's graduation project, titled "Home and Tent," embodies her experiences and aspirations. It symbolizes not only her academic achievements but also the deep connection she has to her roots and heritage. As she completed her studies, she expressed, "Today marks the end of a new beginning, and I ask God to grant me success in what is to come." Among the many joys of her graduation, Diala's passion for design shines brightly. She dreams of studying abroad, perhaps in Italy, to further hone her skills and broaden her horizons. "I want to create spaces that inspire and uplift," she stated, her eyes sparkling with ambition. Diala’s story is a poignant reminder of the potential that lies within individuals, even in the face of adversity. For those fortunate enough to meet her, it is clear that her journey has just begun. While she faces fears about the future and the realities of occupation, her vision for a brighter tomorrow fuels her passion to create meaningful change in her community through design. As her chapter at Dar al-Kalima University comes to a close, Diala stands not just as a graduate but as a beacon of hope for many. Her commitment to her craft and her desire to inspire others underscore the importance of supporting institutions like Bright Stars of Bethlehem. Investing in students like Diala ensures that the next generation of leaders in Palestine can flourish and pursue their dreams. Diala’s story is one of courage, tenacity, and the transformative power of education. As she steps into this new phase of her life, she carries with her the hopes of many who believe in the potential for change, creativity, and hope in the heart of Palestine. (fb)

"After 18 months of conflict, we still struggle to agree on a ceasefire. What kind of world is that? In times of war, people often direct their pleas to God, asking, Where are you? because they feel the heat of oppression in their daily lives. However, in Gaza, the question is not aimed at God. With each tragic loss, the people cry out in Arabic, asking, Where is humanity?” - Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb (fb)
