Overview
Welcome to Washington International Club, Inc. (WTW) is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Established in 1959, the club aims to foster friendship and understanding among women from diverse cultural backgrounds. With a current membership of over 400 women from approximately 80 nations, WTW provides a platform for social interaction, cultural exchange, and educational activities.
Mission and Values
The club's mission is encapsulated in its motto, "Friendship through Understanding...Understanding through Friendship." WTW promotes a welcoming environment for women relocating to the Washington area from various countries, encouraging dialogue and camaraderie among its members. The organization is committed to remaining non-political and secular, focusing on building community ties and appreciation for diverse cultures.
History
Founded by Marian Adair, WTW held its inaugural meeting on April 13, 1959, with 135 attendees. Adair envisioned an organization that would facilitate interactions between American women and those from other nations, thereby contributing to global peace and understanding. This initiative aligned with President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s "People to People" campaign, emphasizing the importance of personal connections in reducing international conflict.
In 1986, as many participants in WTW began to establish similar clubs in their home countries, Welcome Clubs International (WCI) was formed to support these new organizations. While WTW operates independently, it maintains an affiliation with WCI, which includes a network of sister clubs worldwide.
Membership
Membership at WTW is open to women from all backgrounds, including native-born U.S. citizens and international residents. The club embraces a diverse range of members, including diplomats and spouses of ambassadors accredited to the United States.
Members engage in various activities, often organized through interest groups focused on specific cultural or educational themes. These activities may include historical site visits, cooking demonstrations showcasing international cuisines, and language practice sessions.
