Amateur Athletic Union of the United States
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) of the United States is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to promoting and developing amateur sports and physical fitness programs across the United States. Founded in 1888, the AAU is one of the largest non-profit, multi-sport event organizations globally, with a mission of providing opportunities for people of all ages to participate in sports.
History
The AAU was established to set standards and uniformity in amateur sports, initially serving as a leader in international sports and guiding U.S. participation in international sports federations. In its early years, it played a significant role in preparing athletes for Olympic events. By the late 1970s, the AAU shifted its focus towards grassroots sports programs for all ages and skill levels.
Programs and Events
The AAU offers a wide array of sports programs, covering over 50 sports including basketball, boxing, gymnastics, handball, swimming, diving, water polo, wrestling, and track and field. Key events include the AAU Junior Olympic Games and the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships, which is the largest volleyball event in the world.
Awards and Recognition
The AAU annually awards the James E. Sullivan Award to the nation's outstanding amateur athlete, honoring qualities of leadership, character, and sportsmanship. Established in 1930, this award is a salute to James E. Sullivan, a founder and past president of the AAU. Additionally, the AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes athletes who have made significant contributions to amateur sports.
Social Impact
Beyond competitive sports, the AAU also focuses on community engagement through its AAU Cares initiative, aiming to provide educational and social opportunities to athletes and communities. The organization is also a member of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), promoting education through sports.
Mission and Vision
The AAU's mission is to foster the physical, mental, and moral development of amateur athletes while promoting good sportsmanship and citizenship. Its vision is to create opportunities for athletes to develop to their highest potential through a network of sporting events.
Membership and Structure
With nearly 800,000 members and 150,000 volunteers across more than 50 sports programs, the AAU is structured into multiple districts, allowing it to deliver its programs effectively nationwide.
Partnerships and Collaborations
The AAU has collaborated with various organizations to support and expand youth sports participation. Notably, it partnered with the National Fitness Foundation (NFF) to manage the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, focusing on modernizing fitness education in schools.
