La Leche League International Inc
La Leche League International Inc, often referred to as LLLI, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting breastfeeding and providing mother-to-mother support worldwide. While the global organization is distinct, it is closely related to the US-based La Leche League USA, which was formed in 2009 after an internal reorganization of the larger entity.
History
La Leche League was originally founded in 1956 by seven women—Marian Thompson, Mary White, Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, and Betty Wagner—in Franklin Park, Illinois. Initially, the organization focused on supporting women in the United States who wanted to breastfeed, as nursing was not widely practiced at the time. The first formal meeting took place on October 17, 1956. The organization expanded internationally in 1964, becoming known as La Leche League International, Inc.
Mission
La Leche League International aims to empower mothers worldwide by offering them support, encouragement, and education to help them breastfeed successfully. This mission aligns with the broader goal of promoting mother-child bonding through breastfeeding, recognizing its significance for both the mother's and child's health and emotional development.
Activities and Impact
LLLI provides resources and support through local groups led by trained leaders. These leaders facilitate meetings and discussions that help mothers overcome breastfeeding challenges and achieve their feeding goals. The organization's work extends across roughly 89 countries, reflecting its commitment to global maternal and child health.
In addition to supporting individual families, LLLI has been recognized for its role in the broader breastfeeding advocacy movement. It holds consultative status with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), underscoring its influence in international health policy discussions.
Diversity and Inclusion
La Leche League International has made significant efforts to improve diversity and equality within its ranks, ensuring that its services are accessible to families from diverse backgrounds. This commitment includes race, ethnicity, immigration status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, family structure, language, ability, and socio-economic status.
Challenges and Controversies
In recent years, LLLI has addressed internal debates regarding inclusivity, particularly related to transgender individuals and breastfeeding. These discussions reflect broader societal changes and the evolving understanding of family structures and breastfeeding experiences.
Financial and Governance
Detailed financial information about La Leche League International Inc is not publicly available through standard sources. However, the organization relies on donations and support from its members to continue its mission worldwide.
Conclusion
La Leche League International Inc remains a pivotal global advocate for breastfeeding and family support, offering essential resources for those seeking to nurse their children.
