Non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in recycled plastics can migrate to food many times more than virgin plastics, posing a threat to human health and the environment. NIAS identification and quantification are challenging. For this reason, the article “New method for extraction, identification, and quantification of non-intentionally added substances in polystyrene" by Sacha Pérocheau Arnaud, Veronique Michelet, Sandra Olivero, Patrick Navard, Christelle Combeaud, and Alice Mija, published in the May 2025 issue of Journal of Vinyl and Additive Technology has been chosen as the Editor’s Choice article. This work demonstrated how efficiently the new extraction method can be used to qualify virgin and recycled polystyrene materials for NIAS. (fb)
