Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM)
Overview
The Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women in the aviation maintenance industry. AWAM was founded in 1997 at a conference of the Women in Aviation International (WAI), recognizing the unique needs of women in maintenance roles within aviation.
Mission and Activities
AWAM aims to champion the professional growth and enrichment of women in aviation maintenance by providing opportunities for networking, education, and fostering a sense of community. The organization also works to increase public awareness of the contributions and presence of women in the aviation maintenance sector. It welcomes both women and men as members, including maintenance technicians, engineers, educators, and scientists.
History
The formation of AWAM was driven by the realization that many aviation organizations were primarily focused on pilots, leaving a gap in support for those in maintenance. This led to a need for a platform where women in maintenance could communicate and support each other. Since its inception, AWAM has grown significantly, with over 1,000 individuals and numerous educational institutions and corporations joining its ranks.
Programs and Initiatives
AWAM offers various programs to support its members, including scholarships and awards. In 2002, it initiated a scholarship and awards program that has grown to provide over $190,000 annually to individuals in technical areas related to aviation maintenance. AWAM also partners with other aviation organizations, such as WAI, to provide maintenance-related content and support for events like Girls in Aviation Day.
Recognition and Collaborations
In 2009, AWAM became a member of the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam), collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration to enhance safety in aviation. The organization has received recognition and support from entities like The UPS Foundation, which assisted in enhancing AWAM's electronic infrastructure to better connect with its members and promote its mission.
Structure and Governance
AWAM operates as an all-volunteer organization, with no members receiving compensation for their work. Its leadership is comprised of passionate individuals who dedicate their time to promoting the organization's objectives. Donations from corporate partnerships are utilized to fund AWAM's programs, scholarships, and operational expenses.
Chapters and Events
AWAM has established numerous chapters across different regions, including the Bay Area, Central Florida, and Pakistan, among others. The organization hosts conferences and participates in events focused on aviation maintenance to promote networking and education among its members. In 2025, AWAM is set to host a conference at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Irving, Texas, focusing on professional development and community building within the industry.
