Tankproof

Tankproof is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equitable access to aquatics and food security, particularly focusing on minority communities across the United States.

History and Founders

Tankproof was conceived in 2011 by Thurman and Torrence Thomas, who are also known as the music duo THEFRESHBROS. The organization's mission was inspired by personal experiences and a desire to address significant social issues, such as drowning statistics and food insecurity. Initially, the founders aimed to offer swimming lessons to underserved communities, challenging stereotypes about racial divides in aquatics. Over time, their work expanded to include food security initiatives.

Mission and Activities

• Aquatic Access: Tankproof offers swimming lessons to children and youth, particularly in African American and Hispanic communities. This effort is aimed at reducing drowning incidents, which disproportionately affect minority groups. By 2022, their swimming programs had expanded to nine different states across the U.S.
• Food Security: In addition to aquatic activities, Tankproof works on providing meals to communities in need. This includes partnerships with grocery stores and restaurants to deliver food to underserved areas. The organization has been particularly active during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, providing essential food services to vulnerable populations.

Operations and Impact

Tankproof operates through a combination of creative community outreach and strategic partnerships. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it relies on donations to fund its initiatives. The organization has received recognition for its effectiveness, earning a 4/4 Star rating from Charity Navigator.
