Tankproof

Tankproof

Tankproof provides free swim lessons and food security to kids who need it most! We strive to educate the youth on water-safety and build up a generation of confident swimmers through our team of trained volunteers and our zero-cost swim lessons. The Tankproof program primarily impacts African American and Hispanic communities in Louisiana and Texas in addressing food insecurity. The organization's mission is centered around providing access to swimming lessons and water safety education to underserved children in these communities. While the direct focus of Tankproof is on water safety, the program also addresses broader issues such as health and wellness, which can include initiatives related to nutrition and food access. In many low-income communities, including those predominantly inhabited by African American and Hispanic individuals, food insecurity is a significant issue. By offering swimming lessons and other activities through Tankproof, the organization can reach more children in need.

Description

Tankproof

Tankproof is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equitable access to aquatics and food security, particularly focusing on minority communities across the United States.

History and Founders

Tankproof was conceived in 2011 by Thurman and Torrence Thomas, who are also known as the music duo THEFRESHBROS. The organization's mission was inspired by personal experiences and a desire to address significant social issues, such as drowning statistics and food insecurity. Initially, the founders aimed to offer swimming lessons to underserved communities, challenging stereotypes about racial divides in aquatics. Over time, their work expanded to include food security initiatives.

Mission and Activities

  • Aquatic Access: Tankproof offers swimming lessons to children and youth, particularly in African American and Hispanic communities. This effort is aimed at reducing drowning incidents, which disproportionately affect minority groups. By 2022, their swimming programs had expanded to nine different states across the U.S.
  • Food Security: In addition to aquatic activities, Tankproof works on providing meals to communities in need. This includes partnerships with grocery stores and restaurants to deliver food to underserved areas. The organization has been particularly active during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, providing essential food services to vulnerable populations.

Operations and Impact

Tankproof operates through a combination of creative community outreach and strategic partnerships. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it relies on donations to fund its initiatives. The organization has received recognition for its effectiveness, earning a 4/4 Star rating from Charity Navigator.

Leadership and Governance

Tankproof is led by its co-founders, with a board of directors that adheres to best practices in governance, ensuring transparency and diversity in leadership.

Community Engagement

Beyond its programs, Tankproof uses art and design to engage communities and promote its mission. The organization creates merchandise and organizes events to raise awareness and support for its causes. This approach reflects the founders' background in music and creative arts, using these skills to amplify the organization's impact.
