ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: AMY READER This June and July, "Turn and Face the Strange" will be on display in Gallery FIVE20, showcasing four artists who live and produce in Asheville, NC: Kate Highsmith, Chloe Hooper, Li Newton, and Amy Reader. Each of them suffered from Hurricane Helene's impact on Asheville's River Arts District and they have each spent the intervening months endeavoring to both rebuild their creative spirit and work with the community to restore the vitality of their locality. We will be highlighting each of these artists ahead of the FREE Gallery Opening Reception for this show on Friday, June 6 at 5:30pm. Amy Reader is a fiber artist and educator. She developed a love of making at age 6 when she started making tiny clothing for her stuffed animals, and she hasn't stopped creating since. Amy works primarily with wool, yarn, felt, and thread to explore tiny moments of joy found in the natural world. She translates these moments of joy through her vivid sensory experience as an autistic artist. "Recounting my experiences with Hurricane Helene is nausea inducing. My home was spared, but my community was deeply damaged. Very little of my artwork survived. We are all still rebuilding and it has been a monumental task. In less than one day the majority of the artwork I’ve made was destroyed. For months it felt impossible to make things again. Slowly I have returned to art making. With each stitch and stab I am rebuilding. I’m not remaking what was lost, but making new work that is still informed by what has come before."
