Immigration enforcement in the U.S. has entered a new phase where holding legal status offers little to no protection, due process is inconsistently applied, and institutions that traditionally upheld First Amendment rights are caving in to pressure by the Trump Administration.. Join SAJA and The Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association (AMEJA) for a timely panel featuring journalists and legal experts who are on the frontlines of this unfolding crisis, undaunted by a litigious and unprecedented environment where First Amendment protections can no longer be taken for granted. This discussion will explore: 🔸 The legal gray zones in current immigration enforcement practices 🔸The impact on students, families, and international workers 🔸The trend of campus capitulation to federal pressure 🔸How journalists of color are navigating coverage in an era of diminished press protections Featured panelists: 🔹Hamed Aleaziz, DHS and Immigration Reporter, The New York Times 🔹Meghnad Bose, Reporter and Delacorte Fellow, Columbia Journalism Review 🔹Aymann Ismail, Staff Writer, Slate and President of Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association 🔹Jim Witte, Director, Institute for Immigration Research, George Mason University Moderated by Kiran Khalid, Vice President, SAJA.
