Overview
Chatham Orpheum Theater Inc. is a non-profit organization categorized under Arts, Culture, and Humanities, specifically related to film and video production. The organization operates with a 501(c)(3) designation, making donations tax deductible[2].
History
The original Orpheum Theater opened in 1916 as the first and only movie house in Chatham, Massachusetts. It served the community for 72 years, hosting a wide range of films. The building was later known as the Chatham Theater after being purchased by Interstate Theaters Corporation in 1938. It ceased operations in 1987 and was converted into a CVS pharmacy[1][3][5].
In 2011, a grassroots initiative began to restore the theater. The organization was formed, and over $1.5 million was raised within six months from over 2,400 donors[4]. The building was purchased in April 2012, and renovations were led by Gensler Architects. The theater reopened as a two-screen cinema with a café in July 2013[3][5].
Mission and Activities
Chatham Orpheum Theater Inc. serves as a vibrant community hub, providing educational, inspirational, and entertaining programming through a diverse selection of films. The theater showcases major motion pictures, art-house films, independent productions, documentaries, and works by local filmmakers. The organization emphasizes community engagement and cultural enrichment[1][3].
Financials
The organization relies heavily on contributions, which formed about 77.9% of its total revenue in the fiscal year ending December 2021. Program services accounted for 15.3%, while other sources like investment income and sales of assets contributed smaller portions[2]. The total assets of the organization were reported to be over $5 million, with liabilities totaling approximately $741,000 as of the same fiscal year[2].
Leadership
The organization is led by a board of trustees, with key personnel including Bill Storff as President, Stephen Davol as Treasurer, and John V. "Kim" Doggett as Chairman. Executive roles are volunteer-based, with no compensation reported for these positions[2]. The Executive Director is Kevin McLain, and Christian Woodard serves as the Theater Manager[1].
Cultural Impact
The Chatham Orpheum Theater has become a significant cultural asset for Cape Cod, providing a venue for both local artists and international film enthusiasts. Its reopening has contributed to the revitalization of Main Street in Chatham and has been recognized for its commitment to preserving cinema as a community treasure[1][3].

Join us this Thursday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m. for a special screening of MARCELLA followed by a Q&A with Director Peter Miller. MARCELLA tells the improbably eventful, delicious story of the Italian cookbook writer Marcella Hazan, a disabled immigrant woman trained as a scientist, who transformed how Americans eat and cook. Her story is told through friends, family and culinary icons like Jacques Pepin, April Bloomfield and Lidia Bastianich. MARCELLA is nominated for a James Beard Award for Best Documentary and will be on PBS American Masters in July. Tickets can be purchased at https://chathamorpheum.org/ (fb)

When Covid shut down the world in 2020, seafood markets closed overnight. No one knew what would happen. No one could predict how the virus would affect our local fishermen, the overall fishing industry and our food supply chains, including food pantries. This past Thursday, the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance hosted a free event - SMALL BOATS, BIG TASTE: HOW A COMMUNITY COMBATTED COVID It was an amazing night! We all learned the story of how the CCCFA launched a program that kept local fishermen on the water and provide nutritious meals to a growing number of people in need. We also learned about our local fish and waters, met the fishermen and staff at CCCFA and enjoyed a sampling of Haddow Chowder and Fish Stew. Thank you Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance and thank you Kim Roderiques for capturing the evening with your beautiful photos.
