Prison Gardens in Greater Boston The New Garden Society (TNGS) is a non-profit organization that transforms the landscapes of Greater Boston prisons, jails and detention centers into gardens. Through the collaboration of horticulturists, landscapers, farmers and incarcerated students, on-site gardens feed students and local neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The gardens also serve as classrooms for therapeutic and vocational training in the art and science of plants. Outside prison gates, TNGS organizes for an increasingly inclusive local green industry that welcomes formerly-incarcerated individuals into the essential work of caring for our landscapes.
