The Five Mile Chapel Society
Introduction
The Five Mile Chapel Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the historic Five Mile Chapel in Anderson Township, Ohio. The chapel has significant historical importance, dating back to its founding as one of the earliest Church of the United Brethren in Christ congregations in the region.
History
The property for the Five Mile Chapel was donated in 1844 by Jacob Markley, the son of early Anderson Township settler John Markley. The chapel itself was built using local stone by its members and has been a central place of worship for the community. Over time, it became the mother church for other United Brethren congregations in Hamilton County and surrounding areas.
Architecture and Significance
The chapel's architectural style features a rectangular floor plan modified by the addition of a bell tower in 1896. A distinctive large Gothic window is present on the front facade. The foundation is made of limestone, while the walls are constructed from imported sandstone, as noted by the National Register.
Community Involvement
The Five Mile Chapel Society has played a crucial role in maintaining the chapel's integrity and preventing damage from natural elements. Through collaborative efforts with local organizations, including Anderson Township, Hamilton County Parks, and Hamilton County Public Works, the society has implemented protective measures such as a permanent wall to safeguard the chapel against creek erosion.
Events and Activities
The organization hosts various annual events, which include a Volunteer Day, an Ice Cream Social, Memorial Day dedications, and a Christmas gathering. These events foster community engagement and support the chapel's ongoing upkeep.
Mission
The mission of the society is rooted in preserving the historical and cultural significance of the Five Mile Chapel, ensuring it remains a vibrant part of the community's heritage. Through volunteer efforts and partnerships, the society continues to ensure the chapel's continued presence in Anderson Township.
Acknowledgements
The Five Mile Chapel Society expresses gratitude to all individuals and entities involved in supporting its mission, recognizing the contributions of generations of caring volunteers who have dedicated themselves to the chapel's preservation over the years.
