Overview

Madelia Community Hospital Inc., now known as Madelia Health, is a nonprofit organization operating in Minnesota, USA. Established in 1918, it has evolved over the years to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the local community.

History

The hospital was founded by Dr. W.J. McCarthy, who converted the Hoffman residence on East Main Street into a private hospital with 12 beds. The initiative was well-received by the community and became a self-sustaining enterprise. In 1941, the Village of Madelia purchased the hospital and operated it as a municipal hospital until 1954.

Developments and Expansion

• 1997: A significant addition was made to accommodate various services, including a clinic, laboratory, and ambulance facilities.
• 1999: A new main entrance was constructed to improve accessibility, and the Madelia Clinic joined Mayo-ISJ.
• 2001: The hospital achieved Critical Access Hospital status.
• 2004: The Madelia Community Hospital Foundation was established to support healthcare improvements.
• 2010: The hospital was designated as a Level 4 Trauma Hospital.
• 2011: Mayo Clinic Health Systems ended operations, and Madelia Community Hospital signed a service agreement with Mankato Clinic.
• 2017: Designated as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital.
• 2020: Expanded services to Lake Crystal with a pharmacy and clinic.
• 2021: The organization rebranded as Madelia Health and expanded into Truman.
• 2023: New leadership took over, and further expansions were made in St. James.

The Madelia Health Foundation, established in 2004, supports the organization through fundraising and philanthropy, focusing on improving local healthcare services and equipment. It has raised over $3 million for various projects, including upgrading the ambulance service to Advanced Life Support.

Today, Madelia Health continues to expand its services, offering a range of healthcare options close to home for the communities it serves. It remains committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care while supporting local healthcare needs through its foundation and community programs.
