Description

Minnesota Humanities Center

The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the study and promotion of the humanities in Minnesota. Founded in 1971, it serves as the state's exclusive affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

History

Initially known as the Minnesota Humanities Commission, the organization underwent a name change in 2007 to better reflect its expanded role in education and community engagement. This change emphasized its position as a central hub for humanities programming across Minnesota.

Mission and Vision

The MHC aims to spark positive change by increasing collective understanding of individuals, communities, and histories through storytelling and experiential learning. Its vision is to create a society that is curious, connected, and compassionate.

Programs and Activities

MHC offers a variety of programs and services, including:

  • Professional Development: Opportunities for educators and professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Public Programs: Events and experiences that connect people with humanities content.
  • Books and Videos: Resources that explore diverse subjects and promote inclusive understanding.
  • Grants: Funding support for individuals and organizations to develop humanities projects.

MHC also operates a full-service event center, which hosts workshops, conferences, and cultural events, fostering engagement and dialogue among diverse audiences.

Governance and Funding

The organization is governed by a diverse board of directors, ensuring representation from across the state. MHC receives funding from federal sources like the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as state agencies, private donors, and foundations. This financial support enables MHC to continue its mission of promoting humanities education and programming.

Strategic Initiatives

MHC prioritizes organizational strength, innovative programming, and inclusive outreach. It continues to adapt its strategies to address the evolving needs of Minnesota communities, with a focus on marginalized and underrepresented voices.

As a key player in Minnesota's cultural landscape, the Minnesota Humanities Center plays a vital role in bridging communities and fostering deeper understanding of the humanities.
