South Main Preservation Society
The South Main Preservation Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historic integrity of the South Main Street area in St. Charles, Missouri.
History
The organization was formed in the 1970s by a group of residents who met in a Victorian house on South Main Street. Initially, their goal was to support and preserve the historic architecture of the area while promoting business and tourism. Over time, the group grew and became formally organized with a mission statement and bylaws.
Mission and Activities
The South Main Preservation Society aims to protect the architectural heritage of the Historic District while fostering a viable business environment to support preservation efforts. The organization has been instrumental in arranging historic festivals, such as a 19th-century crafts festival, which later evolved into the Festival of the Little Hills. This annual event celebrates Missouri statehood and highlights local history.
Preservation Efforts
The society has actively worked to preserve historic landmarks in the area, including relocating the KATY Depot to prevent its demolition. Members have also provided guidance on historically accurate restoration practices and materials. Additionally, they have conducted research to place educational plaques on significant buildings, enhancing public awareness of their historical value.
Community Engagement
The society organizes the "Christmas Traditions" program, which attracts families and visitors from Thanksgiving to Christmas by featuring "living history" characters and Santas from around the world. This program contributes to local tourism and cultural enrichment.
Governance and Impact
South Main Preservation Society members are actively involved in city governance, monitoring preservation and restoration projects to ensure that historical integrity is maintained throughout the district. Despite occasional challenges, the organization remains committed to its preservation goals, making it a prominent voice for historical preservation in St. Charles over the past 35 years.
