When mom is your role model - and she wears scrubs - you might end up doing the same. That's true for Jordan Wasserman, MSN, RN, critical care nurse in St. Joseph. Her mom, Kim Wasserman, BSN, RN, inspired her to pursue nursing and the critical care specialty. Kim noticed Jordan's interest early on. "When [Jordan] was little, she'd take out my anatomy and physiology book and wanted to learn all about how the body worked," said Kim. "Today, my heart is full when we are able to share experiences, and I can pass my knowledge and wisdom along." Jordan remembers being fascinated by the hospital while growing up. "I would visit my mom when she worked on the critical care unit. I spent time watching monitors in awe of the nurses and their role in saving lives," said Jordan. Kim also worked in critical care for two decades, before now working as a nurse educator and AHA training coordinator. She said, "One of my proudest moments was watching Jordan graduate with a Master's degree, all while having an infant. She has become a strong nurse in critical care." "Now [Jordan's] 4-year-old, my granddaughter, studies the same anatomy book and wants to learn. It'll be interesting to see what path she takes," Kim added. (fb)

Lesa Parker’s pursuit of a degree in business felt like a path chosen for others and not herself. Her passion lied in directly helping others. Lesa, a Benton Harbor resident, eventually found the courage to change course. She earned her associate’s degree in nursing and officially became a registered nurse in 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through all that uncertainty and fear, Lesa held hands, reassured patients and made sure they could communicate with their families through phone calls and video chats. She became their bridge to the outside world. “I knew then that I was meant to be a nurse," said Lesa. "Nursing isn’t just about medical care, it’s about being there mentally, spiritually and emotionally.” In January, Lesa transitioned from inpatient to home care - supporting patients who might be recovering from surgery or living with a long-term illness. Lesa admits that it has been one of the biggest challenges of her career. Taking this step required courage - to adapt and believe in herself. (fb)
