Purpose and Mission

The organization's purpose aligns with that of La Leche League International: to help mothers worldwide breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education. They aim to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as a crucial element in the healthy development of both babies and mothers.

Activities and Support

La Leche League Leaders in Mn-Dakotas are experienced parents who have breastfed or chestfed their own children. These Leaders are trained and accredited by La Leche League International to assist parents and parents-to-be with all aspects of breastfeeding. The organization offers free meetings and consultations, either in person or remotely, to support breastfeeding families.

History and Context

La Leche League International, the parent organization, was founded in 1956 in Franklin Park, Illinois, by a group of seven women. Since then, it has grown into an international organization with a presence in about 89 countries. The La Leche League of Mn-Dakotas contributes to this global effort by providing localized support and education.

Diversity and Inclusion

In line with La Leche League USA's commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Mn-Dakotas branch supports all breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding families, regardless of race, ethnicity, immigration status, national origin, creed, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, family structure, primary language, ability, or socio-economic status. This approach ensures that a wide variety of perspectives are considered and represented within the organization's leadership.

Philosophy

The basic philosophy of La Leche League emphasizes that mothering through breastfeeding is a natural and effective way to meet a baby's needs. Key principles include the importance of human milk as the natural food for babies, the need for mother and baby to be together early and often, and the value of loving support from family members in enhancing the breastfeeding relationship. Additionally, they advocate for good nutrition and guidance that reflects acceptance of children's capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.
