“Two Lights for Tomorrow” observance is happening this evening! Walk, bike, or motor by the historic Galloway House (336 Old Pioneer Rd) to see the “2 if by sea” signal lights in its tower. Do you know the facts from that famous night? Here are some we gleaned from the Paul Revere House website: We don’t know who actually hung the lanterns in what is now called the Old North Church in Boston, MA on April 18, 1775. Paul Revere asked a friend to do it; it was likely the church’s sexton, Robert Newman. The lanterns were a predetermined signal to fellow Sons of Liberty across the Charles River that the British planned to go “by sea” rather than march “by land” in case Revere was unable to leave town. Revere stopped by his house to pick up his boots and overcoat. Two friends rowed him across the river where he borrowed a horse from John Larkin, a patriot sympathizer; he began his famous ride about 11pm. After narrowly avoiding capture, he changed his planned route and rode through Medford, where he alerted Isaac Hall, captain of the local militia, then most houses from Medford through Mentomy (now Alrington). Arriving in Lexington sometime after 12am, the guard outside the house where Samuel Adams and John Hancock were staying told Revere to not make so much noise as he approached. Revere called out, “Noise! You’ll have noise enough before long. The regulars [British militia] are coming out!” William Dawes, another rider spreading the alarm that night, traveled through Boston Neck and also arrived in Lexington after midnight. The 2 continued on towards Concord along with fellow “high son of Liberty” Samuel Prescott. During an encounter with a British patrol, Prescott and Dawes escaped but Revere was taken captive for some time, questioned, then released – albeit without his horse. Revere walked back to Lexington, arriving in time to see the latter part of the battle on Lexington Green. We hope you stop by! (fb)
