United States Power Squadrons
The United States Power Squadrons (USPS), also known as America's Boating Club, is a non-profit, educational organization founded in 1914. Its mission is to improve maritime safety and enhance the enjoyment of boating through extensive educational programs in seamanship, navigation, and related subjects.
Mission and Objectives
USPS is committed to promoting safe boating practices, fostering camaraderie among its members, and contributing to the community through various educational initiatives. The organization emphasizes community service, continuing education, and friendship as core objectives.
Membership and Structure
The organization comprises approximately 45,000 members, structured into about 450 squadrons across the United States and some U.S. territories. This makes it the largest U.S. non-profit boating organization.
Educational Programs
USPS offers a wide range of courses designed to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge for safe and legal boating operations. These include basic boating safety courses, advanced navigation using modern equipment like GPS and radar, and specialized courses in celestial navigation, weather, marine engine maintenance, and cruise planning. The basic course is compliant with standards set by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).
Vessel Safety Checks
In addition to educational programs, USPS conducts free vessel safety checks. These checks are performed by qualified USPS vessel examiners who inspect vessels for required safety equipment. If a vessel passes the inspection, it is awarded a sticker. Findings from these checks are not reported to law enforcement agencies.
Civic Recognition
The organization has been honored by three U.S. presidents for its contributions to the community.
Parallel Organizations
A parallel organization operates in Canada under the name Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) in English and Escadrilles canadiennes de plaisance (ECP) in French, founded as an offshoot of USPS in 1938.
Flag and Symbolism
The USPS ensign features a distinctive design: a red canton with 13 white stars surrounding a fouled anchor on a background of 13 blue and white stripes. This flag was officially adopted by the organization by 1915 and is detailed in USPS bylaws and operational manuals.
Tax Status
The United States Power Squadrons operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Tax Identification Number
The organization's Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 386113670.
