The PLUS Coalition is a diverse international non-profit organization with participation by associations representing over 250,000 stakeholders across 26 countries. The PLUS Coalition mission is: To simplify and facilitate the use and preservation of artworks. With no international standards for the communication of image rights, and with no means to easily and reliably determine the attribution and rights information associated with digital images, the use and preservation of images is an unnecessarily complex endeavor, fraught with confusion and liability. The PLUS Coalition solves this challenge by standardizing and codifying a universal language for the communication of image rights, for use by photographers, illustrators, stock agencies, artist representatives, publishers, advertising agencies, designers, museums, galleries, libraries, educational institutions and others when offering, requesting, managing and using images. PLUS rights metadata is designed to be read not just by humans, but by machines, allowing simplified, automated license transactions and rights management. PLUS metadata travels within digital image files, and may be separately stored in registries and other databases, allowing anyone possession of an image to easily view, understand and confirm the accuracy of the rights information. PLUS will also provide a centralized image rights metadata repository, allowing users to register and locate the rights holder and rights associated with any image. PLUS makes the use and preservation of images simpler, more transparent, and of greater value for everyone on every side of the process.
