Description

Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center

The Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the LGBT community in Imperial County, California. Established in 2015, the center has been a vital resource, providing comprehensive programs, support groups, and essential services to at-risk populations.

Services

The center offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Drug Abuse Education: Providing informational resources and support for drug abuse issues.
  • HIV Testing and Counseling: Offering confidential HIV testing and counseling services.
  • Individual and Family Counseling: Providing mental health support through individual and family counseling sessions.
  • Anger Management and Domestic Violence Support: Offering group services for anger management and domestic violence support, though these may incur a fee if court-ordered.
  • Youth Programs: Fostering environments for youth development and support.
  • Community Events: Organizing community events to promote unity and awareness.

Mission and Vision

The mission of the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center is to create a safe space and empower the LGBT community by connecting them to essential resources. Their vision looks toward a future where equality in the Imperial Valley is fully embraced.

Activities and Support

The center is open to all community members, welcoming individuals from the Imperial Valley and beyond, including those from nearby Mexicali. It hosts various support groups, including those specifically for transgender and nonbinary individuals, youth, and guardians. While most services are free, some may incur costs depending on the nature of the service.

In recent years, the center has faced questions regarding its commitment to serving the trans community and changes in its mission and branding. Despite these challenges, it remains an important resource for the local community.

History

Founded by Rosa Diaz, the center began as a response to the lack of support for LGBT individuals in the region. Diaz, who faced challenges within her own faith community due to her orientation, sought to create a space that would welcome and assist individuals questioning their sexual identity. The center has grown from these roots to become a comprehensive service provider.

Challenges and Future Directions

The center's evolution and response to community needs continue to be shaped by both internal and external factors. While it has faced criticism and challenges, it remains a point of reference for community support and advocacy in the Imperial Valley.
