Description

National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a lineage-based, non-profit, service-oriented organization for women who are direct descendants of those who contributed to American independence during the Revolutionary era. Founded on October 11, 1890, by Mary Smith Lockwood, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Eugenia Washington, DAR is committed to historic preservation, education, patriotism, and community service.

Mission and Goals

The organization's mission is to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support educational initiatives. Its goals are achieved through various divisions that focus on historical research, educational support, and patriotic activities.

Membership Requirements

Membership is restricted to women at least 18 years old who can prove direct descent from individuals who served the cause of American independence during the Revolutionary War. These ancestors could have been military personnel, officials, or recognized patriots.

Activities and Contributions

  • Historical Preservation: DAR operates a significant genealogical library and museum at its headquarters, which houses extensive collections of American historical artifacts and documents. Temporary and permanent exhibits often feature historic items such as antique furniture, silverware, and textiles.

  • Education: The organization supports several schools, including Berry College, Crossnore School, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, Hillside School, and Hindman Settlement School. It also provides scholarships and educational resources for Native American students.

  • Patriotism: DAR members engage in numerous civic projects, including volunteering at veterans' hospitals, supporting active military personnel, and participating in naturalization ceremonies.

Publications and Affiliations

DAR publishes American Spirit Magazine and maintains affiliations with the Children of the American Revolution, a complementary organization for younger descendants of Revolutionary-era patriots.

Membership and Structure

With approximately 190,000 members across the United States and other countries, DAR operates through a network of local and state chapters. These chapters often participate in local historical preservation efforts and community service projects.

History

The formation of DAR was part of a broader surge in patriotic societies during the late 19th century. It was established after women were denied membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, leading to the creation of a separate organization for women descendants of Revolutionary War patriots. Over the years, DAR has grown significantly, becoming one of the largest and most influential lineage societies in the United States.
