HamWAN
Overview
HamWAN is a US-based non-profit organization, registered under the IRS identification number EIN 461176347. It is dedicated to developing and implementing high-speed amateur radio data networks. The organization's mission is to create, operate, and coordinate free digital networks, fostering open access and interoperability among similar networks.
Objectives
HamWAN aims to establish standards for high-performance microwave networks. One of its key goals is to create a reference implementation of these networks, such as the Puget Sound Data Ring in Washington State. This network serves as a model for other regions, promoting the development of amateur radio networks that are multi-megabit, IP-based, and suitable for digital amateur radio applications.
Network Applications
HamWAN networks are utilized for various purposes, including:
- Low-latency repeater linking: This allows for efficient communication between distant repeaters.
- Real-time video feeds: Enabling real-time video transmission from remote locations.
- APRS I-Gates: Serving as gateways for Amateur Packet Reporting System data.
- Emergency Operations: Providing redundant internet access to emergency operations centers.
Membership and Governance
HamWAN offers three levels of membership:
- Member: Open to everyone upon enrollment.
- Supporting Member: Requires a minimum six-month donation period at the basic level.
- Director: Supporting Members who are elected to the board, responsible for governance and strategic decisions.
Certification and Standards
To be recognized as a HamWAN network, an organization must meet specific criteria:
- Client Node Configuration: Networks must allow hams to connect using standard client node configurations.
- Internet Routability: Networks must be routable on the Internet, ensuring interconnectivity.
- Open Access: Networks must be open to all licensed amateur radio operators.
Impact and Expansion
HamWAN's influence extends beyond its primary network in the Puget Sound area, with other networks across the United States and Canada adopting its standards. This supports the creation of interconnected amateur radio networks that enhance communication and data sharing capabilities within the amateur radio community.

HamWAN A modern multimegabit IPbased digital network for amateur radio use. HamWAN is a nonprofit organization 501c3 developing best practices for high speed amateur radio data networks. HamWAN also runs the Puget Sound Data Ring which is a realworld network implementation of the proposed designs. So far HamWAN networks have been used for things like lowlatency repeater linking realtime video feeds from distant locations serving APRS Igates providing redundant internet access to emergency operations centers and more.
