West Alabama Food Bank, Inc.
Overview

The West Alabama Food Bank, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1987. Its primary mission is to alleviate hunger and food insecurity across nine counties in West Alabama, including Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa.

Operations

The organization operates as a central clearing house, collecting surplus food from donors such as supermarkets, manufacturers, wholesalers, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This food is then sorted, stored, and distributed to qualified non-profit agencies within its service area. These agencies, in turn, distribute the food to individuals in need, often at a significantly discounted rate, with every dollar spent by an agency purchasing approximately $12.25 worth of food at retail prices.

The West Alabama Food Bank has a large facility with on-site cold storage, allowing it to effectively manage and distribute vital resources. By partnering with local pantries, churches, and community centers, it ensures that those facing food insecurity have access to nutritious food.

Impact

As an affiliate of Feeding America and a member of the Alabama Food Bank Association, the West Alabama Food Bank plays a significant role in addressing hunger in its region. Over the years, it has distributed more than 17 million pounds of food, supporting a population of over 315,000 residents, with a substantial portion living in poverty.

The organization's work is crucial given the high food insecurity rates in its service area, ranging from 15% to 31%, significantly higher than the national average. Through its extensive network of partner agencies and volunteers, the West Alabama Food Bank serves more than 200,000 children, families, and seniors annually.

Financials and Ratings

West Alabama Food Bank, Inc. had a revenue of $9,734,130 in 2022. The organization has received a Three-Star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting a good level of accountability and financial management. While it has strengths in governance and program expenses, it currently lacks complete financial transparency, indicating areas for improvement.

Contributions

Contributions to the West Alabama Food Bank can significantly amplify food availability, with every $1.00 donated equating to 6 meals for those in need. The organization continues to expand its reach through partnerships and community engagement, aiming to end hunger in the region.
