Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Inc

Overview

Gamma Phi Beta Sorority is a social sorority founded on November 11, 1874, at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. It was the first Greek organization to be officially termed a "sorority," with the term coined by Dr. Frank Smalley, a Syracuse University professor, in 1882. The founders, Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis, and Mary A. Bingham, aimed to create a supportive environment for women on campus.

History

Gamma Phi Beta has a rich history of growth and philanthropy. Initially known as a society, it gained the title "sorority" in 1882, marking a significant milestone in recognizing women's organizations in the United States. The organization expanded throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming an international sorority with the establishment of its first Canadian chapter in 1919. Gamma Phi Beta's humanitarian efforts have been notable, including contributions during both World War I and World War II, and more recently, through partnerships with organizations like Girls on the Run.
