Overview
Neighborhood Design Center Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing healthy and equitable neighborhoods through community-engaged design and planning services. Founded in 1968 and headquartered in Maryland, the organization supports broad participation in the evolution of the built environment, focusing on historically disinvested neighborhoods.
History
The Neighborhood Design Center was established during a period of significant social change. Following the civil unrest and white flight that occurred in Baltimore after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, a group of architects began working with low- and moderate-income communities to rebuild and enhance their environments. Initially a volunteer organization, by the early 1970s, they secured funding and hired their first paid staff to manage the growing demand for services.
In 1993, the organization expanded to Prince George's County, leveraging a regional volunteer base from Northern Virginia to suburban Baltimore, while assisting various statewide initiatives.
Mission and Activities
The organization's mission involves empowering communities to envision and create better public and shared spaces. They collaborate with residents, community stakeholders, design professionals, local government agencies, and fellow nonprofits to improve blocks, renovate parks and school grounds, reclaim abandoned structures for community use, and revitalize commercial districts.
Neighborhood Design Center emphasizes community-led design, providing tools, expertise, and partnerships necessary to realize neighborhood visions. Their work is guided by the belief that well-designed public spaces make communities safer, happier, and healthier.
Financial Operations
As of recent financial disclosures, Neighborhood Design Center Inc. reported revenue of $2,055,475, with expenses totaling $1,927,588, resulting in a net income of $127,887. The organization's revenue is primarily derived from contributions and program services. Donations to this organization are tax-deductible.
Impact and Recognition
Over its history, the Neighborhood Design Center has worked on more than 4,000 community-led projects in Baltimore City and Prince George's County. The organization is recognized for its role in community improvement and capacity building, reflecting its commitment to equitable neighborhood development.
