Black Women's Agenda

The Black Women's Agenda, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in 1977 in Washington, D.C. It is dedicated to advancing, securing, and protecting the rights of Black women and their families. The organization is registered under the EIN number 52-1139558 and operates as a 501(C)3 entity.

Mission and Objectives

The Black Women's Agenda focuses on addressing the disparities faced by Black women, particularly in areas related to poverty, economic opportunities, and education. It aims to promote social priorities through policy discussions and advocacy, working towards meaningful change.

History

The organization evolved from the work of ten women who developed a Black Women's Action Plan for the International Women's Year (IWY) Conference in Houston, Texas, in November 1977. This action plan was well-received and became the basis for a resolution on minority women's rights adopted at the conference. Following the conference, these women founded the Black Women's Agenda as an active organization to implement the recommendations from their action plan.

Programs and Activities

The Black Women's Agenda conducts a range of activities to achieve its mission:

  • Annual Symposia and Workshops: It hosts annual workshops and symposia, which include town hall discussions and awards luncheons. These events focus on empowering Black women and celebrating their achievements.

  • Financial Workshops: A series of virtual financial workshops aimed at empowering Black women economically, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company.

  • Spirit of Change Conversation Series: This program fosters dialogue to reduce polarization and increase understanding across different communities.

  • Four for 4 Voter Initiative: Encourages voter participation by engaging members of collaborating organizations.

  • Because We Care Initiative: Offers support and resources for African-American caregivers through free forums and discussions.

  • Inform & Inspire Program: Promotes STEM education among African-American women.

Collaborations

The Black Women's Agenda collaborates with numerous national Black women's organizations and networks, currently comprising 22 collaborating organizations. These partnerships include sororities, civic groups, service organizations, and faith-based entities, representing millions of women worldwide.

Leadership and Endorsements

The organization is led by a diverse board of directors. It has endorsed significant nominations, such as Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, and partners with groups like Common Cause to protect voting rights.
