Overview
305 8th Street, also known as Eighth Street Community, is a U.S.-based non-profit organization dedicated to serving adults with diverse disabilities. Founded by Miss Irene Smith in 1979, it initially aimed to provide care for mentally ill adults. Over time, the organization's mission expanded to support individuals with a range of disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, brain injury, hearing impairment, cognitive disabilities, and visual impairments.
History
The original home of Eighth Street Community was established at 305 8th Street in Huntsville, Alabama. The property, built in 1949, was converted into a residence for individuals in need. In 1982, after Inez Bastin took over following Miss Smith's passing, the program began serving intellectually disabled adults and was granted 501(c)(3) non-profit status under the name "Jehovah Jireh, Incorporated," meaning "The Lord Provides." The organization faced challenges but was revitalized in 2007 under the leadership of Andrea Vosper Williams, the granddaughter of Inez and Gordon Bastin.
In recent years, Eighth Street Community expanded its services, adding new homes like "Nora’s House" for female residents in 2017 and another home known as the "MOMS" house. As of 2023, Susan McGrady has taken over as Executive Director, bringing experience in social services and business acumen.
Mission
The organization focuses on providing quality structured living arrangements and care plans tailored to the needs of its residents. It aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by promoting personal growth, advocating for individual strengths, and fostering connections within the community.
Funding and Support
Eighth Street Community relies heavily on grants, gifts, and donations to fund its operations. It provides 24/7 care to its residents, with many relying on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for financial support. The organization encourages community involvement and donations to address the financial gap between the cost of care and the limited income of its residents.
Impact
By offering a supportive community environment, Eighth Street encourages social interaction and inclusion for adults with diverse disabilities. The organization plays a significant role in the local community by providing essential services and advocating for the rights and growth of its residents.
