Description

Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management

The Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public policy and management by fostering excellence in research, analysis, and education. It was formally established at a May 1979 conference at Duke University by representatives of 15 policy schools and research institutes.

History

APPAM was conceived following a 1978 conference sponsored by the Sloan Foundation, which focused on the public policy and management curriculum. The organization evolved rapidly, becoming a unique association of both individual and institutional members with an elected leadership and Policy Council. The first APPAM Fall Research Conference took place in 1979 in Chicago, and the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management was founded in 1981. APPAM moved its headquarters to Washington, D.C. in 1993, marking a significant milestone in its growth.

Mission and Activities

APPAM's mission is centered around enhancing public policy and management through various initiatives. These include:

  • Annual Research Conference: With over 300 sessions, this conference is a key platform for scholars and practitioners to disseminate cutting-edge research.
  • Student Conference: Dedicated to nurturing the next generation of public policy professionals.
  • International Conference: Promotes global dialogue on public policy.
  • Research Awards: Recognizes outstanding contributions to public policy research.
  • Journal of Policy Analysis and Management: A top-ranked journal in the field.
  • Diversity and Entrepreneur Student Fellowships: Supports students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Institutional Member Forums, Webinars, and Podcasts: Provides various platforms for knowledge sharing and community engagement.

Membership

APPAM comprises approximately 2,000 professional members, 1,500 student members, and 100 institutional members. Its membership reflects a diverse community of scholars, practitioners, and students.

Notable Contributions

APPAM also provides management services to other notable organizations, including the American Society of Health Economists and the National Tax Association, overseeing their conferences, journals, and membership activities. The organization plays a critical role in shaping public policy discourse and promoting effective governance through research and education.
