Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa
Overview

Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by providing employment opportunities and training programs. It is part of the larger Goodwill Industries network, founded by Dr. Edgar J. Helms in 1902 and built on the principle of offering a "hand up, not a handout" to those in need[1][2][3].

History

Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa began operating in the late 1950s, with its first establishment in Des Moines in 1955. Over time, it has expanded its services and facilities, including the establishment of a modern rehabilitation center in the 1960s and the introduction of discard collection centers across the community[3].

Mission and Programs

The mission of Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa is to inspire confidence, strengthen abilities, and support individuals toward greater independence. It focuses on providing programs that meet individuals at any point in their employment journey, helping them develop necessary skills to flourish in the workplace. The organization partners with care teams to foster strong work habits, build community connections, and encourage success[4].

Services

Goodwill of Central Iowa offers a range of employment services and trainings, tailored to address multiple barriers to employment such as lack of transportation, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, mental illness, and low-income status. In 2022, it provided services to over 1,400 individuals and offered on-site coaching at more than 70 business locations across central Iowa[4].

Impact

The organization has a significant impact in central Iowa, serving thousands of individuals annually through its mission programming. For instance, in 2019 alone, Goodwill of Central Iowa served 6,779 individuals and placed 558 in employment. Over a decade, it has served 37,000 central Iowans and placed more than 5,000 in jobs[3].

Funding Model

As a nonprofit, Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa relies on support from the local community to fund its programs. It operates a network of stores selling donated goods, using the revenue to support its mission and provide employment opportunities for those facing barriers[4].
