Kenergy Corp

Kenergy Corp is a nonprofit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative based in Kentucky, United States. It was formed in July 1999 through the consolidation of Henderson-Union Electric Cooperative and Green River Electric.

History

The cooperative traces its roots back to when Henderson-Union Electric Cooperative was established in 1936, and Green River Electric was set up in 1937. Notably, Henderson-Union was the first electric cooperative in Kentucky to supply electricity to a member, occurring in October 1937.

Operations

Kenergy operates on a not-for-profit basis, focusing on providing safe and reliable electricity at affordable prices. The cooperative maintains over 7,200 miles of power lines and serves more than 59,000 homes and businesses across several counties in Kentucky, including Breckinridge, Caldwell, Crittenden, Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union, and Webster.

Financial Structure

As a nonprofit cooperative, Kenergy reinvests net margins or returns them to members in the form of capital credits. Since 2012, Kenergy has returned about $17 million in patronage capital to its members and former members. The cooperative's primary income comes from its member services.

Governance

Kenergy is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the members. All directors are Kenergy members, ensuring that the organization remains responsive to its member-owners' needs.

Services

In addition to electricity distribution, Kenergy offers various services to commercial and industrial members, including energy-use assessments, billing reviews, technology evaluations, power factor correction, operational assessments, and power quality assessments.

The cooperative aims to provide safe and reliable electricity while ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency. Its commitment is underscored by its not-for-profit model, which prioritizes member benefits over profit maximization.
