Description

Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, Inc.

Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, Inc., commonly known as FENCE, is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of green spaces and the provision of educational and recreational opportunities that link nature, animals, and people.

History

FENCE was established as a nonprofit nature education and outdoor recreation center in 1984. It began with an original land grant of 112 acres donated by the Mahler family. Since its inception, FENCE has expanded to cover 384 acres, featuring hardwood forests, meadows, and wetlands.

Mission and Activities

The organization's mission is to serve as a community resource for educational and recreational purposes, focusing on nature studies, outdoor recreation, and equestrian activities. FENCE offers a variety of programs and amenities for hikers, birdwatchers, gardeners, astronomers, and those interested in equestrian activities. Notably, it includes the FENCE Equestrian Center, which hosts numerous equestrian events throughout the year, including hunter/jumper competitions, cross-country events, dressage, and carriage driving.

Programs and Initiatives

  • Therapeutic Riding Program (TROT): Teaches horsemanship skills to adults and children with physical, developmental, and cognitive challenges in a supportive environment.
  • Project FENCE Natural History Curriculum: Collaborates with local schools to provide nature education to thousands of students annually.
  • E.A.S.E (Equine Assisted Senior Engagement): A new initiative aimed at individuals with early-stage dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and Parkinson’s, focusing on sensory experiences and social connection through equine engagement.

Governance and Funding

FENCE is governed by a volunteer board of directors working alongside a small salaried staff. The organization relies primarily on grants and donations for its operations. Community events such as golf tournaments and art festivals are also held to generate additional revenue. Volunteer contributions play a vital role in maintaining and expanding FENCE’s programs and facilities.

Conservation Efforts

The entire property is protected by a conservation easement, ensuring it will remain available for future generations as a recreational, nature, and equestrian area. Donations and community support are crucial to the organization's ongoing operations and development.
