Trees for the Planet, founded in 1992, grew out of a concern for an apparent increase in tree mortality in the Appalachian region of the U.S. The organization designs and seeks funding for projects aimed at protecting the healthy functioning of forest ecosystems. Most of its work is done in partnership with other organizations, such as Appalachian Voices. The group's Web site, www.goodwoods.org, seeks to expand appreciation of why forests and trees matter.
