The club's early activities included organizing cruising contests to encourage members to sail to different harbors and participate in social gatherings upon arrival. The first such event was held in 1945. Over time, the club has grown, and its activities have expanded to include various sailing and racing events.

The Sailing Club of the Chesapeake is actively involved in promoting sailing through events such as yacht racing, sail training, and social functions. It supports national and local sailing organizations, including the U.S. Sailing Association and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA).
