I really hate that we are having to make this post, but it is necessary. It is heartbreaking to us to see how disposable pets have become, especially cats and kittens. Today while at PetSmart meeting adopters ( Congrats to Dom, Daisy and Ruby!) we witnessed someone giving kittens away for free, out of a very crowded plastic carrier, to anyone coming in the doors. Luckily, we were able to stop two people who each took a pair of kittens, and shared how important it is to have these babies fixed. We provided them with our contact info so we could help get them fixed (one of them already reached out!). Despite the fact that we are literally bursting at the seams with kittens, we still wanted to help make sure these babies did not contribute to the already overwhelmed pet population. Beacuse it is illegal to give pets away outside of PetSmart, the store employees asked the person giving the kittens away to leave. Within an hour, there was a local Facebook posting about kittens found in the bushes along a busy road behind an apartment buil;ding about a mile away. We recognized the kitties instantly and immediately went to get them. Sadly, we only found 3 of the 6 total dumped. Shelters are full. Rescues are full, including us, and we can only do so much before we are also at a breaking point. Our fosters also have bills and jobs and kids and activities, the same reasons the people who dumped these babies gave for not wanting them. We recently took in several feral cats that were trapped, and 3 of the 4 gave birth shortly after. Someone was going to dispose of 3 local pregnant cats that our wonderful fosters took in, so we are drowning in kittens. (that is 6 moms with babies we have right now). Please continue to encourage spaying and neutering to everyone you know. We may be posting for another vetting fundraiser very soon as one of the young babies has deformed legs. She is the first one to greet us, and has a wonderful little personality, so we are really hoping this can be fixed. She will see the vet this week. We simply wanted to make this post to raise awareness. Pets are not disposable. These babies would not have stood a chance on their own, and we are really hoping to locate the remaining cats, despite the fact we already are bursting at the seams with cats. Sweet Duke is a young adult male Lab/Retriever/Border Collie mix ( best guess), about 50 pounds. While he still has the puppy playful side, he is overall a calm dog in general, and he loves being with kids and other dogs. He is initially a little shy but always gentle, and with a few days to settle in he is part of the family and you will wonder how you ever lived without him. Duke is house trained but did have a transition period to using the tie out instead of a fence, and is calm and quiet in his crate. He rarely barks. Duke can jump a 4 foot chain link fence so a higher fence or no fence is ideal. Duke loves walks and walks well, is very affectionate, and minds house rules like no dogs on the couch. His ideal home would be fun and loving, have a yard to play in and another dog or someone to do daily walks for adventures.
