Description

Kershaw County Historical Society

The Kershaw County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization incorporated by the State of South Carolina, subject to the South Carolina Nonprofit Corporations Act. Established in the mid-20th century, the Society celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025.

Purpose

The primary purpose of the Kershaw County Historical Society is to preserve, study, and promote the history of Kershaw County. This includes seeking, acquiring, conserving, and publishing historical information; presenting educational programs; marking historic sites; and preserving the county's historical places and heritage.

Activities and Exhibits

The Society organizes various events and exhibits aimed at engaging both members and the public in historical discussions. These include yearbooks from local high schools, silent films showcasing historical figures and places, postcards, artifacts related to Larry Doby, Native American relics, and items from historical businesses. One notable exhibit includes the "Our Home Town" silent screen video, which highlights faces and places from the 1940s.

Historical Preservation Efforts

In the late 1960s, the Society identified over sixty historic sites in Camden, marking them with historical markers by 1970. They published a guide to these sites, which has been updated and reprinted multiple times. A significant restoration effort was undertaken on the Bonds Conway House, which was renovated to its original appearance after acquisition in 1977.

Leadership and Governance

The Society operates with a governing board that includes elected officers and committee leaders. Roles within the organization include leadership in publications, photography, historical markers, and archival advisory positions.

Celebrations and Commemorations

As part of their ongoing activities, the Society hosts events such as historical fairs and birthday celebrations, where members and the public can engage with exhibits, participate in discussions, and enjoy cultural festivities like birthday cake and drawings.
