National Wild Turkey Federation

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of America's hunting heritage. Founded in 1973, the NWTF has played a pivotal role in restoring wild turkey populations across North America.

History

The NWTF was established by Tom Rodgers, an insurance salesman and outdoor writer, who envisioned a national organization focused on wild turkey conservation. Initially chartered on March 28, 1973, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the NWTF started as a small organization but has grown significantly over the years. One of its early milestones was the sponsorship of the first Eastern U.S. Open Turkey Calling Contest in Elkins, West Virginia.

Conservation Efforts

The NWTF's conservation efforts are among its most notable achievements. When the organization was founded, there were approximately 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. Thanks to the NWTF's dedicated work, this number increased dramatically to nearly 7 million birds by the early 2000s, marking one of the most successful wildlife conservation stories in U.S. history.

Habitat Conservation

A significant portion of the NWTF's resources is focused on creating and enhancing wildlife habitats. To date, the organization has conserved or enhanced over 22 million acres of habitat, which not only benefits wild turkeys but also supports healthier forests, waterways, and communities. The NWTF achieves this through partnerships with federal and state agencies, such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, as well as private organizations and donors.

Research and Education

Research is a crucial component of the NWTF's mission. The organization has contributed significantly to wild turkey research, allocating over $9 million to various projects since its inception, with more than $1.2 million dedicated between 2022 and 2023 alone. The NWTF also supports educational programs, such as the Women in the Outdoors initiative, which provides interactive outdoor experiences and promotes conservation awareness.

The NWTF is actively involved in advocating for conservation and hunting rights at both the state and federal levels. It has contributed to the development of major conservation legislation, such as the Farm Bill, the Great American Outdoors Act, and the Pittman-Robertson Modernization Act.
