Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus (K of C) is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded in 1882 by Michael J. McGivney, a Catholic priest in New Haven, Connecticut. The organization is dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, with its membership restricted to practicing Catholic men who are in good standing with the Church.
Founding and Early Years
The Knights of Columbus was initially established as a mutual benefit society to provide financial support to families of deceased members, particularly in immigrant communities where Catholics faced discrimination in both labor unions and other fraternal organizations. McGivney recognized the need for such an organization after seeing the impact of death on families without adequate support. The first organizational meeting took place on October 2, 1881, and the Order was officially incorporated on March 29, 1882. The name "Knights of Columbus" was chosen to reflect a sense of ritualistic tradition and to honor Christopher Columbus, a figure celebrated by Catholics in America.
Expansion and Influence
By the late 19th century, the Knights of Columbus had expanded throughout the United States and Canada, establishing its first international councils by 1905. The organization played a crucial role in supporting soldiers during World War I and later contributed to relief efforts in World War II. It has also been involved in various political campaigns, advocating for Catholic values and civic engagement. The Order has been active in lobbying efforts, such as securing the inclusion of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954.
Philanthropy and Services
Today, the Knights of Columbus is one of the world's largest insurance companies and operates various philanthropic initiatives, including support for Catholic education, refugee relief, and charitable causes around the globe. It has a strong tradition of supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and has donated over $382 million in recent decades to programs like the Special Olympics. Additionally, it manages several funds for religious vocations and peace initiatives.
Organization and Structure
The Knights of Columbus has more than 17,000 local councils worldwide, including over 400 on college campuses. The Order is structured into councils, assemblies, and circles, with each having distinct roles and leadership positions. Membership includes men aged 18 and above who are practicing Catholics. Women and young boys can participate through auxiliaries like the Columbiettes and the Columbian Squires.
Financial Operations
The Order operates a substantial insurance company, managing billions of dollars in insurance contracts. It also invests through Knights of Columbus Asset Advisors, aligning its investment strategies with Catholic social teachings.
Current Status
As of 2024, the Knights of Columbus has over 2.1 million members globally. The organization continues to advocate for Catholic principles and support various charitable causes while expanding its influence within the Catholic Church and society at large.
