Central Children's Home of North Carolina, Inc.

The Central Children's Home of North Carolina, Inc. is a nonprofit residential childcare facility located in Oxford, North Carolina. Originally founded as the Grant Colored Asylum in 1883, it operates as a residential group environment for children up to young adults who are unable to remain at home due to dependency, neglect, or abuse.

History

The Central Children's Home was established by the Colored Orphanage Association, which was formed in 1882. The association was supported by Dr. Augustus Shepard and Congressman Henry P. Cheatham, among others. Initially, the facility was known as the Grant Colored Asylum, which was renamed several times over the years. In 1887, it became the Colored Orphanage Asylum of North Carolina; in 1927, it was reincorporated as the Colored Orphanage of North Carolina; in 1965, it was renamed the Central Orphanage of North Carolina; and in 1986, it received its current name, the Central Children’s Home of North Carolina.

Mission

The Central Children's Home provides family-centered services through residential group care for children and youth aged 9 to 21. It aims to create a conducive environment for their emotional, educational, social, spiritual, and physical growth and development, promoting positive family functioning and successful independent living.

Programs and Operations

The home offers a variety of programs to foster the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the children. Historically, children have received work experience in farming, dairying, carpentry, bricklaying, brickmaking, barbering, shoe repairing, food preparation, household skills, laundry, and other areas. The Robert L. Shepard Scholarship Fund, established in 1943, aids children in pursuing vocational and college education.

Affiliations and Accreditation

The Central Children's Home is affiliated with several organizations, including the Child Welfare League of America and the Southeastern Child Care Association. It is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation and licensed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Historical Significance

The original building of the Central Children's Home was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is recognized for its architectural style and historical significance as a segregated orphanage with a rich history in serving African-American children.

Financial and Community Support

The facility operates on donations from individuals and organizations. The support of community groups and organizations has been crucial in sustaining its mission over the years.
