War Horses at Rose Bower works to rehabilitate and find new careers and loving, safe homes for the older "war horses" of Thoroughbred racing. Though many times passed over by adopters due to their ages, veteran racehorses may need a little more time and a little more creativity in finding them the perfect homes, they have paid their dues many times over, often having many owners and trainers for whom they won races in their long careers on the track. War Horses hopes to provide education in the local history as to the importance of horses during the Civil War, and also to teach potential adopters about the wonderful nature of these beautiful athletes.

War Horses at Rose Bower

Overview War Horses at Rose Bower is a Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing rehabilitation, new careers, and safe homes for retired Thoroughbred racehorses. Founded in 2013, the organization is based in Appomattox, Virginia, and focuses on horses aged 7 years or older, or those with over 70 racing starts[2][3].

Mission The mission of War Horses at Rose Bower is to care for veteran Thoroughbred racehorses by offering them rehabilitation and opportunities for new careers or loving homes. The organization prioritizes the welfare and well-being of these "war horses," many of which have had extensive racing careers and require specialized care[1][2].

Activities War Horses at Rose Bower receives horses directly from the racetrack and provides them with necessary rehabilitation and letdown periods. This process allows the horses to transition smoothly into new roles, such as trail riding, companionship, or participation in equestrian disciplines like hunting or jumping[1][2]. The organization also offers sanctuary for horses unsuitable for adoption due to soundness issues, where they can participate in therapy or educational programs[1].

Adoption Process To ensure the horses are placed in suitable environments, War Horses at Rose Bower requires potential adopters to complete an application, provide references, and agree to a contract stating the horse will not be sold to a livestock auction. Adopters are also allowed to return horses to the organization if necessary[2].

Community Engagement War Horses at Rose Bower engages in local community initiatives, including outreach and education about Thoroughbred aftercare. The organization participates in events and collaborations with other racing and equestrian groups to promote the welfare of retired racehorses[2][5].

Accreditation and Recognition As a TAA-accredited organization, War Horses at Rose Bower meets rigorous standards for Thoroughbred aftercare, emphasizing its commitment to providing high-quality care and rehabilitation services[1][4].
