Dr. Linda Metayer (Faculty member and Haiti Country Director) and Andrew Leone (Associate Director for International Programs) recently led a series of trauma healing workshops in Douala, Cameroon as part of the initiative “Harnessing Data Science to Promote Equity in Injury and Surgery in Africa.” The project is a collaboration with researchers from UCLA, D-SINE Africa, the Higher Institute of Technology, and others. Participants included hospital patients recovering from violent trauma, hospital personnel, and traditional healers. They practiced mind-body medicine techniques, learning skills like soft belly breathing, guided imagery, drawing, and shaking and dancing. This work builds on our growing presence in Africa, along with recent trainings in Mozambique, South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda.
