South Carolina Correctional Association
The South Carolina Correctional Association (SCCA) is a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization that focuses on enhancing criminal justice practices in South Carolina. It was established in February 1979 as part of a chapter pilot program initiated by the American Correctional Association's Board of Governors. This allowed SCCA members to hold dual membership in both state and national chapters.
Purpose and Mission
The SCCA aims to provide a platform for professional development among its members through various workshops, seminars, and annual conferences. These events address issues pertinent to criminal justice professionals and stakeholders. The association also publishes quarterly newsletters to keep its members informed about current events and developments in the field.
Membership and Activities
Membership in the SCCA is open to individuals interested in and supportive of the organization's goals and mission. Members are involved in a range of activities, including community, social, and athletic events that foster communication and public awareness about the challenges faced by professionals in the corrections sector.
Relationship with the American Correctional Association
As a state chapter of the American Correctional Association (ACA), the SCCA aligns with the ACA's objectives of promoting excellence in corrections and influencing national correctional policy. The ACA is the oldest and largest international correctional association, serving all disciplines within the corrections profession.
Leadership Structure
The SCCA is led by a board of directors that includes various positions such as chapter development, membership, and publication/public relations. The association also supports initiatives like the Women’s Task Force, which focuses on empowering women in the corrections field.
Community Engagement
The SCCA conducts conferences and events that contribute to fostering positive community relationships and networking among its members. It emphasizes collaboration, insight sharing, and creating a supportive network within the corrections community.
