Humane Society of Sarasota County Inc.
The Humane Society of Sarasota County Inc. (HSSC) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that serves as the region's premier no-kill animal shelter. It was incorporated in 1952 and has since become the area's largest no-kill shelter, operating without government or national humane organization funding.
History
The HSSC was established following a personal tragedy involving Donald Evans, who lost his dog after it was euthanized by local authorities. This incident prompted Evans to initiate the founding of a humane society to prevent similar events from happening to others. On February 8, 1952, the organization was officially incorporated with the purpose of promoting animal welfare in Sarasota County, Florida.
Mission and Values
HSSC's mission focuses on engaging the community to help animals, providing compassionate care to shelter pets, finding them permanent homes, and promoting responsible pet ownership. The organization's vision is a community where all animals are cared for and loved, which it pursues with unwavering commitment through values of compassion, commitment, and responsibility.
Operations and Programs
- Shelter Services: The shelter has undergone significant expansions and renovations, most recently completing a major project in 2021. It can house over 200 animals at any given time, saving approximately 3,000 lives annually.
- Animal Clinic: Offers wellness services such as vaccinations and routine check-ups, though it is not a full-service veterinary practice.
- Community Programs: Includes pet therapy programs for children, seniors, and individuals with special needs, as well as basic obedience classes for dogs.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Encourages community involvement through various roles within the shelter.
Recognition and Funding
HSSC relies entirely on contributions from private donors, organizations, and corporations. It has received a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating possible, indicating effective use of donations and strong financial health. Additionally, HSSC has been awarded the Platinum Seal of Transparency by Candid (GuideStar). In 2023, the organization was a finalist for Nonprofit of the Year in the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Awards.
Adoption Policy
The adoption process at HSSC is designed to be thorough yet efficient, ensuring a smooth transition for both animals and new owners. The shelter does not offer holds on animals ready for immediate adoption, aiming to place them directly into loving homes. Adoption fees cover essential services like spaying/neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, and a rabies vaccination.
