Travelers Protective Association of America
The Travelers Protective Association of America (TPA) is a nonprofit fraternal benefit society founded to provide fellowship and insurance benefits, initially aimed at traveling salesmen. Over time, the organization has expanded its membership eligibility to include various occupational groups.
History
The TPA originated from a gathering of traveling salesmen in Chicago in January 1882. The organization formally established itself in Bellefontaine, Ohio, on June 24, 1882, initially focused on negotiating concessions with hotels and transportation companies and advocating for its members' grievances. By 1890, to ensure financial stability, the TPA introduced an accident insurance benefit and relocated its headquarters to St. Louis, adopting its current name.
Initially, membership was restricted to executives and sales representatives of manufacturing and wholesale businesses. However, by 1979, the organization opened its doors to all male traveling salesmen aged 18 to 55, with other occupational groups admitted through special board review. Women were welcomed as members starting January 1, 1993.
Structure
The TPA operates on a typical three-tiered fraternal system, comprising local chapters (posts) and state divisions, with the national organization based in St. Louis. The association is licensed to sell insurance in 38 states.
Mission and Activities
TPA's mission is focused on championing hearing inclusion through financial assistance and advocacy, promoting safer communities, offering accident insurance, and engaging members in social and service activities. The organization emphasizes the importance of accessible hearing care and education for individuals with hearing loss.
One of its notable initiatives is the TPA Hearing Trust, which provides grants for hearing aids and other support services to individuals needing assistance with hearing loss. Since its inception, the Trust has distributed over $2.4 million to approximately 6,100 beneficiaries.
TPA also actively participates in community projects, including awarding scholarships and supporting child safety programs. The organization hosts various events, such as quarterly board meetings and national conventions, to facilitate networking and strategic planning for its members.
Membership and Impact
A significant portion of TPA's members have been involved with the organization for over 25 years, reflecting a strong sense of community and loyalty. Through targeted marketing efforts, TPA has enhanced its brand presence and attracted new members by leveraging social media platforms, optimizing its digital presence, and securing media coverage.
Overall, the Travelers Protective Association of America plays a critical role in fostering community connections, promoting safety, and providing essential services to its members, while also addressing the needs of individuals with hearing impairments across the United States.
